Soft Hacking Hostlity
While strolling through the city, people often experience fatigue from standing. Public spaces should offer opportunities for various activities such as reading, resting, conversing, observing, basking in the sun, and social interaction. Unfortunately, numerous defensive architectural elements and the lack of infrastructure in the city hinder the realization of these activities, especially for marginalized groups. The social phenomenon of exclusion raises questions: "Who is welcomed by the city?"
The project began with field research in Halle, where hostile architecture in the city was observed and documented. Sensory ethnography and documentary photography were employed as methodologies to systematically capture and analyze different types and objectives. Through interviews with social organizations, I identified pedestrians as the target audience and designated public gathering spaces in the city as achievable design goals. In a series of urban intervention experiments, I continuously sought suitable areas and forms for intervention.
The design outcome consists of two independent yet coordinated interventions in the neighborhoods of Neustädter Passage and Steinweg. By upcycling discarded items to create functional interventions, these places were cleverly transformed into soft spaces and areas to mitigate the hostile atmosphere in the urban environment. In this way, I aim to invite and inspire people to linger in public spaces pleasantly and comfortably. By highlighting the existence of defensive architecture, I seek to raise the collective consciousness of the public and encourage them to engage spontaneously and positively in such interventions.
